how to check another mac

I've installed tech tool pro 8 on my mac mini and want to check my macbook pro as i think it has a logic board fault. i have installed protogo onto a usb pen and tried to boot from that. i get the option to choose between the pen and hard drive but it just starts loading then goes to a blank white screen, it is also doing this when i try to reinstall yosemite on another pen drive. is it possible to put the macbook pro into target mode and get the software on my mini to check the laptop? or will it only check the drive its installed on?
