volume clone doesn't seem identical

I have been using the TechTool Clone Volume toll to create periodic external drive backups of my hard disk that I can take offsite in case of fire or flood. On my old computer, TechTool 9 would essentially create an identical version of my hard drive as far as I could tell.

I have a new computer with TechTool 12.0.4 installed. When I use the Clone Volume tool to copy the hard drive to an external drive and then inspect both drives with the MacOS Disk Utility, there are differences in the volume sizes, suggesting that the external drive is not an identical copy of the internal drive.

The New Computer is a MacBook Air 2019 13 inch
macOS 10.15.7
The disk is an SSD 1TB with APFS

The external Drive is an actual spinning disk, also formatted to APFS. After the Volume Clone, both the internal and external disks contain an APFS Container with multiple volumes. If you compare the sizes of the volumes within the two containers, they are approximately the same but not equal. There is also a "VM" volume in the internal disk that does not appear in the external disk.

Also, I do check the "Verify destination copy" box in the Volume Cloning tool, but progress notifications give no indication that a verification step is taking place. This is another difference from version 9, where it copies over the volume and then starts over and verifies it.

Anyway, the process right now is not giving me a lot of confidence that I have a reliable backup from this process. Can anyone fill me in on what is going on with the new TechTool version and macOS?

Thhanks... Let me know if there is more information I can provide to be helpful.
