I/O Error reporrted, but Tehtool says it passed the test

Hi, I am using a 2012 Macbook Pro with El Capitan. Techtool Pro 9 (not yet updated).

I am getting a report of I/O errors. Yet when I check Techtool prefs the program says it passed, so I would see the box come up that says "Techtool is reporting I/O errors, go to the preferences panel" and when I go there it says that it passed the I/O test just a minute ago.

Some background: recently I had what amounted to a drive failure. (The mac genius bar guys said it was a kernel panic of some sort and there was a partition problem on my drive) I am using a Western Digital SSD (500 GB), and it would be rather unusual for it to have partition problems only a few months in, but whatever, sometimes random things happen.

I restored my mac from a time machine backup and am running it off an external drive for now (just to be dead sure the problem isn't the internal drive itself) and had planned to migrate to the internal later. Other wise it runs fine, if a tad slowish, but since it is USB 2.0 I expected that.

Anyhow I just wondered if I should be too concerned. One of the things I was trying to figure out was if my drive failure was the drive (a relatively new one) or something deeper that requires a new laptop. The I/O errors I am getting make me think something is up, but I don't know what, if anything. Or maybe it's just random corrupted files, which is not good, but at least reparable.

Any ideas out there?
